Could Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry join Donald Trump’s cabinet?

Republican Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry is being mentioned as the possible attorney general for President-elect Donald Trump.
A New York Post story published this week listed Landry, former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker and Missouri U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt as leading candidates for the appointment.
USA Today Network is seeking comment from Landry, who served as Louisiana’s attorney general before taking office as governor less than a year ago.
As recently as July, Landry was quoted in The Advocate newspaper saying it would be “disingenuous to leave prematurely,” but that was before Trump’s comeback victory was complete.
The Louisiana governor has long been close to Trump and to the president-elect’s son Don Trump Jr., who is a key member of the Trump transition team.

Landry was called “MAGA’s Next-Gen Hero” in a profile in Rolling Stone magazine’s election edition this fall.
The Rolling Stone story said Landry is “poised to pick up the MAGA flag.” It also quoted sources who believe Trump could appoint Landry as U.S. attorney general if he regained the White House.
Landry has been a Trump stalwart for years and supported the former president’s White House comeback bid with an early endorsement, returning the favor from Trump, who backed Landry’s bid for governor in 2023. Trump Jr. also led a rally for Landry in Bossier City.
Trump Jr. has also attended Landry’s famous annual alligator hunt fundraiser in Acadiana.
